A short guide about Paradise Bay

One of the most striking places of the whole Antarctic Peninsula is Paradise Bay; this is where glaciers tumble into the sea and icebergs break off and are later carved into wonderful shapes by the wind and the sea. Paradise Bay is only one of two venues used for cruise ships to stop at the continent, the other is Neko Harbour.

The name Paradise Harbour was chosen because of the setting's serene ambiance and it is a photographer's dream, and some say it is Antarctica's most beautiful place. When the glaciers are not calving icebergs, the waters can be peacefully smooth with the surrounding glaciers and snow covered peaks mirrored on the water. This is an awe-inspiring spot to catch a sight of a glacier calving - the moment when a monstrous chunk of ice breaks off the front of a glacier and dramatically crashes into the sea to become an iceberg.

Paradise Habour is well suited for exploring in a Zodiac - a small inflatable rubber raft that can hold about a dozen passengers and is powered by an outboard motor. Travelling in these low lying Zodiacs can give you a different perspective of how tall the icebergs really are with their blue and green shades of refracted light. Also these Zodiacs can take you to places where your cruise ship cannot travel and some tours also provide sea kayaks for exploring in.

Located here on the banks of Paradise Bay is the Chilean scientific base (Gonzalez Videla Antarctic Base) and the Argentinean base (Almirante Brown Antarctic Base) and for some tour passengers visiting these stations may be their only chance to set foot on Antarctica.
